Building Better Communities
Every other week beginning February 22, West Michigan Works! (WMW!) will highlight the five high-demand industries in our region: agribusiness, construction, health care, information technology and manufacturing. This week, WMW! is shining a light on careers in the construction industry.
If you are considering a career in a skilled trade, now is an ideal time. As older generations retire, there is a continuous need for people that can step into various construction-based roles. According to state labor marketing information, the industry projects a 6.1% increase in employment between 2018 and 2028.
The construction industry provides opportunities for people to grow into a great career with no formal training or degree. According to the West Michigan Works! 2021 Hot Jobs List several job titles such as construction laborer, landscape crew leader and roofer require no formal education requirement.
Once you get started in the industry, there are many opportunities to grow your career. An apprenticeship is a great way to get on-the-job training and classroom learning while earning a paycheck. Once you complete an apprenticeship and pass the required exams, you’ll have a professional certificate that will allow you to grow within the industry.
The key to success is not always a four-year degree. Employers want to train and grow employees who show an eagerness to learn and work hard.
