Work From Home Success
As our world continues to face a new normal, many people are learning how to work in a familiar, but different environment, their home. Here are a few tips for making your remote office space work for you.
Develop a Work from Home Routine
Whether you have a flexible start or stop to your day, or you have a set schedule, it is important to create a routine that works for you and your company’s needs. Have a designated start time, do certain tasks at set times throughout the day or week and have regular check-ins with a supervisor or coworkers to keep each other updated. It is also a good idea to have an end to the workday routine, signifying the transition into your personal time.
Here are a few tools to help you set and keep your daily or weekly routine: use a calendar, a project management or planning system, email reminders or a written list.
Have a Dedicated Workspace at Home
Whether you sit at your kitchen table, a desk or a spot in the basement, finding a comfortable workspace will help set the tone for your day. While you may enjoy relaxing on the couch while working, it is essential to pick a place that is not the same as where you would relax or unwind for the day. A dedicated workspace helps to get you in the right frame of mind and recognize that it is time to work.
Take Clear Breaks or Rest Periods
Take a full lunch break to allow yourself to get away from your computer and work. This break will allow you to come back with a clear mind and new ideas. If your company allows for breaks (typically employees are allowed to take two 15-minute breaks) each day, take this time to get up and clear your mind—take a walk, grab a quick snack, make a phone call or interact with someone else in your home.
