Army veteran Daniel Dennison

Daniel Dennison, an Army veteran with five years of service, faced significant challenges transitioning back into the community after his release from prison. Navigating an unfamiliar job search process, Daniel’s parole agent referred him to the West Michigan Works! Grand Rapids SE Service Center for employment assistance.

Upon arrival, Daniel met with Veterans Career Advisor Brian K. Strong and Program Manager Elena Bridges at Volunteers of America Michigan’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program. Together, they created a targeted job search strategy for Daniel, focusing on roles like Maintenance Technician or Repair Services that would leverage his skills. Daniel was advised to be open about his background while highlighting the valuable skills and experience he had gained.

Before meeting with Brian and Elena, Daniel had already submitted over 50 job applications without success. Part of their job strategy was helping him craft a skills-based resume and guiding him toward employers willing to hire those formerly incarcerated. Brian and Elena helped Daniel overcome transportation challenges and pursue job opportunities along accessible bus routes. To further support Daniel, the team connected him with the Volunteers of America Michigan Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program, helping him secure stable housing.

The WMW! Grand Rapids SE Service Center was an essential part of Daniel’s success. Here he was able to access a computer to create a MiTalent account, build a resume and apply for jobs. The service center was also centrally located and ideal for meeting with the Veterans Career Advisor and Volunteers of America Michigan staff to assist in his barrier removal, employment and housing services.

Through hard work and perseverance, Daniel secured a position as a full-time Sanitation Associate at Bimbo’s Bakery, starting at nearly $20 per hour while earning a significant raise shortly after. Daniel has also secured stable housing and purchased a vehicle to support his commute.

Daniel’s story is a powerful example of what teamwork and veteran advocacy can achieve, thanks to the efforts of West Michigan Works! and community partners like Volunteers of America Michigan.
